All OUT Swim 2012
Submitted By Andy Sinclair
Meet Manager Devan McNeill and his symphony of excellent volunteers conducted a masterful 2012 version of the All Out Swim, hosted by Downtown Swim Club at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre on April 21st.
In so many ways, the meet was a roaring success, measured not least by one world record and numerous provincial and national standards. Amongst these was Kate Moore’s double smash-up in the 50 Back, first on the Medley relay, and then pared down to a 35.40 in the individual event. The swim confirmed her status as Ontario’s sin qua non of female masters backstroke sprinters - she now holds the record in the 40-44, 45-49, and 50-54 age groups.
DSC’s only other female representative was Maggie Bergeron, who played a key role on her winning medley relay. She also placed second in her individual competitive swimming debut with a solid 1:16.27 100 Free.
The men won the team rankings unchallenged, with a score of 1514 points over second-place North Toronto Masters SC (1090). A total of six relay victories contributed to the win, including an intrepid effort by the 240-279 200 Free relay comprised of Joe Wearing, Chris Adamson, Apolinar Garcia and Tony Dunn.
Individually there were too many fine swims to mention but as usual Eric Bianchini won his 50 Free as well as the 50 Fly and 100 Free; Don Ainslie continued his Fly domination with 50-100 wins; Nick McIlveen lost a heartbreaker in the 50 Back but made up for it with a beautiful 200 IM victory; and Leo Guerrero, swimming in his first meet, recorded a third place finish in the 50 Breast. Paulo Valencia had three individual firsts and, overcoming injury, Hugo Cadena placed in both the 50 Fly and 100 Free. Mike Vokins and Antoine Huynh had second-place finishes in the 100 Breast and Luis Banda won his 50 Back. Jason Evans continued to make his presence felt with a third-place 50 Breast, Jeff Green came in third in the 200 IM, and Blair Jones won his 50 Breast. Ironman David White swam five individual events and never placed lower than fifth, and contributed to two winning relays. Sal Youssef won his 50 Back and Calvin MacLean placed second in his. Brendan Luxton had a second-place 200 Free finish as did Jairo Gomez in the 200 IM. Check out the all the results for yourself here.
Pain is subjective, but the pain of long-course distance freestyle is palpable. Distance aces Carlos Escobar and Apolinar Garcia swept the 800 free and placed 2-3 in the 400 - quite the double in a five-hour meet. Way to go, boys!
Of course, the team would have been lost without Coach Alisa Abgarov, who provided much technical support and spirited leadership. There were so many hardworking volunteers on the scene, it would be a shame to miss anyone, but here is a partial list anyway: Phillip Coupal, Mike Starr, Chris O’Shaughessy, Chris Hau, Ernie Lam, Coach Alex and Coach Matthew. Apologies and thank you’s to the numerous omissions.
As per mandated Downtown Swim Club tradition, the day was concluded in sportsmanlike fashion with a well-attended social gathering at Woody’s, followed by an excursion to The Barn.
